All About Books

Read Me a Story Mommy!

As a homeschool momma, one thing I am extremely proud of is that my kids can read, and I taught them!

There’s something truly special about opening a book, especially a children’s book. Opening a new book opens your mind and heart to new adventures. The way books have the ability to impact children makes my heart so happy. They are amazing building blocks for the rest of their lives. Just hearing the title of a book can take you back to a very special time and place. Books allow our imaginations to soar while learning meaningful lessons and taking us to a place where anything is possible.

Developing a love for reading is simple with stories that are fun, exciting, and easy to understand. Stories with talking animals and magical lands encourage kids to dream big and think creatively. Imagination plays a huge role in problem-solving, storytelling, and even future learning. Positive reading experiences help kids associate reading with enjoyment instead of work. I cherish the moments when I had two kids in my lap as we read bedtime stories. Reading together allowed us to laugh at silly moments, provided the opportunity for them to ask questions, and filled them with complete awe when they learned a new word.

Books allow for the teaching of big life lessons in simple ways with their favorite characters. Stories about friendship, kindness, honesty, bravery, and perseverance can help children understand emotions and relationships. More recently we have read Charlotte’s Web, Because of Winn-Dixie, Holes, The Giver, and Wonder. Reading these books has brought on conversations about how to care for others, the importance of standing up for what’s right, and growing through challenges—lessons that will be long remembered beyond the last page. As an added bonus, we have been watching the movies together to further bring the books alive. My kids have had big opinions about the similarities and differences between the books and movies.

There is not an age limit on children’s stories; revisiting books from childhood brings a sense of joy and happiness. We get to escape to simpler times while allowing ourselves the chance to see the world through a child’s eyes again. Plus, children’s books often deliver powerful messages that we may have forgotten in the craziness of life.

Books serve as tools for learning, imagination, and connection. They shape young minds and teach valuable lessons. Incorporate reading as a daily habit to encourage growth, and when you open the next book, remember you aren’t just reading; you’re opening a door for adventure, creativity, and a lifelong love of reading!
